Our Book

The Future of Public Education: One District’s Journey to Transform Schools and Systems presents both a rich narrative and compelling evidence for how school districts and their communities can transform their system of teaching and learning to prepare their students for our rapidly changing world. Penned by Barnett Berry, Mike Matsuda, and Michael Fullan, the book traces the decade-long journey of Anaheim Union High School District in putting together the interaction of 8-Factors for systemness. The book also points to what the district did not get done—and why—and what a roadmap to the future looks like. Essential moves: A renewed, community-wide North Star for public education, anchored in a reimagined teaching profession—with teachers and students together.
The book is about how in deeply divided society, political consensus can be found in a shared purpose of preparing every student with the real world skills necessary for social and economic mobility as well as prepare them to effectively contribute to a safe, civil society.

Transformation Tools

In addition to focusing on school-level transformation, RedesignEd is examining the necessary conditions at the school and district level that make innovation possible and sustainable. The Redesign District-Level Navigator is a tool designed to align district conditions and school practice simultaneously. At the school level, the tool helps leadership teams assess and strengthen five essential redesign features.
We also leverage The Learning Policy Institute’s Secondary School Redesign Self-Assessment Tool; created for teams to identify your school’s assets, needs, and opportunities to transform teaching and learning goals, structures, and processes.
With both tools, teams engage in disciplined self-assessment not as an end in itself, but as the starting point for action, using evidence of current conditions to develop a focused strategic roadmap that clarifies priorities, sequences key moves, and guides implementation over time.
