The Need:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

K\u201312 and higher education are under pressure: disengaged students, declining enrollment, shrinking budgets, and growing political divides over the purpose of schooling in an AI\u2011driven world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To meet this moment, schools must develop students\u2019 academic, real\u2011world, and relational skills so they\u2019re prepared for career, college, and civic life. As AI automates routine work, every graduate needs to learn new things quickly, tackle complex challenges, and navigate human relationships in diverse settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvard economist Raj Chetty\u2019s research shows that economic connectedness\u2014cross\u2011class networks\u2014is one of the strongest predictors of upward mobility. This demands a new paradigm: schools woven into their communities, with workplace learning that builds the social capital students need to thrive in adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Challenge We Must Confront:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The core challenge with school redesign is that schools were built on a factory-model structure that no longer fits the developmental, academic, and civic needs of today’s students Superintendents and other education leaders today are being asked to deliver outcomes that traditional systems were never designed to produce. In order to thrive in our rapidly changing world, students need to be: (1) deeply engaged in learning; (2) well known by adults who teach and mentor them, and (3) supported in learning both foundational academic and durable (or real world) skill. Yet most district structures were built for compliance, coverage, and efficiency. The result is not a lack of effort. It is systemic misalignment. The redesign effort must overcome deep structural, cultural, and implementation barriers to create schools that support strong relationships, deeper learning, equitable access, and meaningful pathways into adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Opportunity:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

RedesignEd is buoyed by 2024 polling data that shows that progressives and conservatives, while deeply divided on many matters, can find common ground on educating young people in a rapidly changing world. The majority of Americans, irrespective of their political proclivities, want big changes in schooling with “the #1 mission” shifting “from college prep to real-world skills.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business leaders foresee a severe shortage of skilled manufacturing workers and are looking to create a well-connected ecosystem of technical colleges, public schools, universities, and community-based organizations. The federal government is talking historic steps to integrate programs and resources from education and labor. In addition, across the nation, red and blue states are investing in community schools, high school redesign, and microschools just as bipartisan calls for reinvention of civic education mount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt Coleman<\/strong> is the CEO of Inflexion. His focus on school systems change is rooted in organizational theory and informed by Matt’s extensive experience working at every level of the secondary education system, as an educational assistant, middle and high school teacher, high school assistant principal, middle and high school principal, director of secondary education, and assistant superintendent. This depth of experience gives him an understanding of how real schools function and how change actually happens. Matt combines real-world school leadership, system redesign expertise, and research-based frameworks into a coherent, actionable approach that has produced measurable improvements for historically underserved students. He\u2019s one of the few leaders who can speak fluently to teachers, principals, superintendents, and policymakers\u2014and help them build sustainable systems that actually work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Michael Matsuda<\/strong> (retired) is a nationally recognized educational leader and a prominent voice in civic education and cross-sector civic leadership. As Superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD), he transformed a traditional 7\u201312 system into a dynamic, student-centered community school pipeline through the groundbreaking Career Preparedness Systems Framework (CPSF), the Anaheim Pledge, and the Anaheim Collaborative. This collective impact initiative unites AUHSD with K\u20136 feeder districts, local community colleges, universities, and industry partners through a shared vision of uplifting students’ human potential, backed by vital data agreements that track long-term performance and matriculation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Central to this work is an emphasis on student voice, purpose, civic engagement, and workforce alignment. He has championed innovation and entrepreneurship by launching district-wide initiatives like the AIME mentoring program\u2014which secures over 300 paid internships annually\u2014and establishing nationally recognized career pathways in cybersecurity, AI, biotech, entrepreneurship, and game design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, he continues to shape the national landscape of school reform as a Harvard Fellow, the Executive in Residence at the Loyola Marymount University School of Education, and the lead consultant with RedesignEd (RDE). He is also the co-author (with Barnett Berry and Michael Fullan) of two seminal books: The Future of Public Education: One District’s Journey to Transform Schools and Systems<\/em> and Educating for a Purposeful Life<\/em> (with David Brazer). His systemic leadership has earned numerous honors, including Education Week’s<\/em> “Leaders to Learn From,” an honorary doctorate from Chapman University, and the “Outstanding Community Partner” award from the University of California, Irvine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Barnett Berry<\/strong>, a Senior Research Fellow at the Learning Policy Institute, focuses on school redesign and
the teaching profession. He serves as a senior advisor to RedesignEd as well as for 2Revolutions and the
Center for Reimagining Education at the University of Kansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been a high school teacher, a RAND social scientist, professor of education, and senior leader at the SC Department of Education. His work with the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future spurred his founding of the Center for Teaching Quality (CTQ) in 1999, a non-profit he led for 20 years to advance a bold brand of teacher leadership.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His book, Teacherpreneurs: Innovative Teachers Who Lead But Don’t Leave (2013)<\/em>, set an ambitious agenda for the profession and public education.  In 2021, Berry was honored by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards with the James A. Kelly Award for Advancing Accomplished Teaching.  His latest book, The Future of Public Education: One District’s Journey to Transform Schools and Systems <\/em>(2026), captures the why, what, and how of a reimagined teaching profession, with teachers and students together, and the strategic moves that practitioners and policymakers need to make. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tim Nguyen<\/strong> co-founded MeridianLink, Inc. in 1998 and has served as Strategic Advisor since 2025. Previously he’s served as President and Chief Executive Officer of MeridianLink, Inc. Tim has influenced the strategic direction of the company since its founding and was recognized as Innovator of the Year by Orange County Business Journal in 2021. Tim is the co-founder of the non-profit learning platform, eKadence Learning Foundation.
